Israel gives British West Bank team seven days to leave after settlement sanctions

Israel has ordered a British military team based in Ramallah to leave within seven days. The instruction, reported by The Telegraph on 11 September, also covers a smaller British military and diplomatic group working on the Gaza ceasefire from an international headquarters in Kiryat Gat.

The British Support Team numbers about 10 staff. Its written task is to advise and train Palestinian Authority security forces that police parts of the West Bank under the Oslo Accords. In recent years the same officers have sent detailed reports on settler attacks to London and to Washington through the office of the United States Security Coordinator. Whitehall officials described the cell as the West's eyes and ears on that violence.

The team was due to grow to roughly four times its present size in the coming weeks. That expansion is now cancelled. Officials in London said Israel had been intercepting the team's communications and had been looking for a reason to shut the mission. One official told The Telegraph that Israeli services listen in particular to the reports on settler violence and conditions in the West Bank.

The expulsion is framed in Jerusalem as a reply to British trade measures against goods from West Bank settlements. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced those measures after the Israeli government advanced plans for the E1 development, which would connect Maale Adumim to Jerusalem and cut the West Bank in two. Miliband said the project would make a two-state map unworkable.

A British defence source said closing the Ramallah team hands Israel a gift, because it removes an independent military channel that had been feeding both London and the Trump administration. The same source said the reports were among the few regular, on-the-ground military assessments of settler attacks that allied governments received.

The Oslo security model depends on PA forces holding Areas A and B while the Israel Defense Forces retain overall control and operate in Area C. Training and liaison missions from Britain, the United States and other partners have sat inside that arrangement for years. Removing the British cell does not dissolve the PA police. It does cut a reporting line that had become politically inconvenient in Jerusalem once those reports started to travel into sanction debates in Europe.

Settler violence in the West Bank has been recorded at high levels through 2025 and 2026 by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and by Israeli rights groups. The British team's value to London was not that it stopped attacks. It was that it produced contemporaneous military notes rather than delayed NGO tallies.

Israel still hosts other foreign officers. The Kiryat Gat cell was a small piece of the ceasefire monitoring architecture, not a combat unit. Its removal, paired with the Ramallah order, signals that Britain is being treated as a hostile diplomatic actor on the Palestinian file even while it remains a formal security partner.

What happens in the next seven days is practical. The soldiers have to leave. Their replacements will not arrive. The PA units they trained will keep working with whoever is left in the liaison chain. London will have to decide whether to answer with a further economic step or to treat the expulsion as the price of the settlement sanctions it has already chosen.

The larger question sits with Washington. If the British reports were also reaching the U.S. Security Coordinator, the Trump administration now loses a feed it did not staff itself. That is a narrower loss than a change in force posture, but it is a loss of sight in a territory where most of the daily violence never reaches a camera.
