The Indian Super League will open its 2026-27 season on 10 October and run through May 2027, the league said on Saturday. The campaign will be played home and away under a new club-led model. One hundred and sixty-three matches are scheduled across eight months.
The team that finishes first after the league stage will be named Shield winners, treated as the official champions, and given a route into Asian competition through zonal qualifiers for the AFC Champions League Two. The top six will then play off for a separate title, the ISL Cup. Playoffs are back after they were dropped from the shortened 2025-26 season, which was a single-leg round robin of 13 games each. East Bengal won that table with 26 points, their first ISL title.
Thirteen clubs are listed: Bengaluru FC, Chennaiyin FC, Churchill Brothers FC, East Bengal FC, FC Goa, Inter Kashi FC, Kerala Blasters FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Mumbai City FC, NorthEast United FC, Odisha FC, Punjab FC and Sporting Club Delhi. Churchill Brothers' place is still subject to regulatory approval. The Goan club is expected to come in where Jamshedpur FC left. Diamond Harbour FC won the 2025-26 Indian Football League and earned promotion, then failed to pay the administrative fee. The league said the club will sit at the bottom with no points, will not keep ISL status for 2027-28, and will play in the IFL next season.
That last paragraph is the actual news inside a date announcement. Promotion only works if the promoted club can pay to exist in the top division. Diamond Harbour could not. The league has chosen a paper punishment rather than a mid-table vacancy: the club's name stays on a table it cannot climb, then drops away. It is a messy way to defend a promotion principle, and it is clearer than pretending a 14th side will appear in October.
The club-led model is the other change. For a decade the ISL was a franchise product with a central owner setting the calendar. Clubs now hold more of the operating power. Home-and-away football over eight months is what those clubs asked for. It is also more expensive. Thirteen squads have to travel the country from October to May, not through a compressed winter window. Broadcasters get more inventory. Players get a season that looks like a league rather than a tournament.
Two trophies will confuse casual viewers and please the clubs that finish first but lose a playoff. The Shield is the table. The Cup is the knockout. Asian qualification is tied to the Shield. That choice tells you which title the league wants taken seriously abroad. Domestic television will still sell the Cup final as the night that matters.
Churchill Brothers is the historic name on the list and the one that may yet fall off it. Without approval, the 13 becomes 12 and the fixture count moves. Sporting Club Delhi is the new metropolitan entry. Inter Kashi remains the inland experiment. The Kolkata pair, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, start as the reference clubs after East Bengal's Shield last season.
10 October is late by European calendars and normal for an Indian autumn. The date gives the monsoon a chance to leave the pitches. It also means the business end of the table will collide with the IPL spring, which is the commercial fact every ISL season has to live with. The league has now said how it wants to be counted: 163 games, a Shield for the best team over the distance, a Cup for the best of six in May, and one promoted club already on its way back down.
