Ishan Kishan makes 270 as East Zone pile 708 on South in the Duleep final

Ishan Kishan made 270 off 334 balls at MA Chidambaram Stadium on 7 September and took East Zone to 708 in the first innings of the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone. It was his first first-class double hundred. He reached 200 off 270 balls, retired hurt on 250 with cramps, came back, and was caught at long-on by Smaran Ravichandran off spinner Tripurana Vijay.

The innings had 30 fours and seven sixes. Rediff’s close-of-play card and India Today’s earlier snap differ on the exact boundary count at the 200 mark. The final line is not in dispute: 270, 334 balls, Chepauk, captain’s innings, East all out or declared at 708 depending on the last-wicket details as stumps approached. Kumar Kushagra made a maiden Duleep hundred in the same innings. Abhimanyu Easwaran scored 72 and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 44 at the top.

South Zone’s attack spent two days on a batting pitch. Mohammed Siraj, the India fast bowler, bowled 25 overs across the two days, took no wicket and conceded 140 runs. Chama Milind removed Sooryavanshi. Devdutt Padikkal, a part-time spinner, was the bowler Kishan cut for four to reach 200. Tilak Varma captained South. None of that will comfort a dressing room that has already leaked 708.

Kishan now sits on a short list of double-centurions in Duleep Trophy finals: Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Anshuman Gaekwad, Raman Lamba, Cheteshwar Pujara, Yusuf Pathan, Yashasvi Jaiswal and now the East wicketkeeper-batter. For East Zone itself he is the third man to 200 in the competition after Arun Lal, who did it twice in 1986-87, and Saba Karim, unbeaten on 200 in 1995-96.

The timing is the part that will travel beyond Chennai. Kishan has been in and out of India’s white-ball sides and has needed first-class runs that selectors cannot wave away as a T20 splash. A 270 in a final, built over two days, with a retirement for cramps and a return, is the sort of innings that gets written into a selection note even when the Duleep Trophy is treated as a calendar obligation.

Chepauk offered a true surface. Most batters who lasted got a start. Kishan’s method after the overnight 111 not out was the pull against anything short and the square cut when the spinner dropped short. India Today counted 11 boundaries from the pull on the way to 200. The shot that took him to 250 was a drive to long-on. The shot that ended the innings was another ball in the same region, this time held.

South Zone now bat against a total that wins most first-class matches before lunch on day three. A draw is still available if the pitch stays flat and the weather holds. A win for South would require two innings of a quality they did not show with the ball. East will bowl with a 708 behind them and a captain who has already done his job with the bat.

Domestic finals rarely change national conversations. This one has a number attached that will. Two hundred and seventy in a Duleep final is a line that survives the week, whatever happens to the rest of the card.
