Mahesh Shelke, 37, a manager of retail sales and field officer for Indian Oil Corporation posted in Nanded North, was stabbed seven times on Tuesday evening while his team tried to seal a petrol pump in Hingoli district. The wounds were in the abdomen, chest and back. He died. Police registered a murder case on Wednesday and arrested four people within 12 hours. A fifth suspect was still being traced.
The pump is the Sai Umesh outlet in Ambachondi village, Basmat tehsil. Shelke and three or four colleagues reached it at about 4:30pm on Tuesday to take over and seal it. The outlet had been closed for nearly three months and had recently started selling again. The man police identify as the attacker is Umesh Pandvir, 24. Also arrested were his mother, Lata Sahebrao, 46, Shravan Gangadhar Wakude, 24, and a family friend.
A sealing visit that became a killing
Indian Oil field officers seal pumps when a dealer is off the books: stock irregularities, a lapsed agreement, or sales continuing after a closure order. The Indian Express account of the Ambachondi visit says the team was there for an official takeover. The confrontation happened at the pump, not at an office. Seven stab wounds, in three regions of the body, are the injury finding police have given. They imply a sustained attack rather than a single blow in a scuffle.
Petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri wrote on X that the case had been taken up with the most senior officials of the Maharashtra government and police, and that he wanted swift and strict action. He said the safety of energy-sector staff remained paramount. The post is the Centre's public line. The arrests are the state's. Four in custody inside twelve hours is a fast clock for a village in Basmat tehsil. It does not replace a charge sheet.
The comparison officers are already making
The killing has been set beside the 2005 murder of Indian Oil sales officer Shanmugam Manjunath, who was shot dead in Uttar Pradesh after he sealed a pump selling adulterated fuel. The comparison is not a legal finding. It is the frame Puri's own reference, and the reporting around this case, have used. Manjunath was 27. Shelke was 37. Both were on a sealing job. The weapons and the states differ. The job that put them on the forecourt is the same.
Dealer disputes in India sit on a large retail network. Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum license thousands of outlets to private dealers who hold the stock and the staff. A field officer who arrives to seal is often the first company representative a dealer has seen since the closure notice. Ambachondi's pump had been shut for about three months and had reopened. That gap, between a closure and resumed sales, is the commercial fact behind Tuesday's visit.
What is still open
Police have a murder case, four arrests, and a fifth person not yet held. They have not, in the reports available on Wednesday night, published a statement from Pandvir or a motive beyond the sealing. Shelke's posting was Nanded North. The pump is in Hingoli, the neighbouring district, inside the territory a retail field officer covers. His colleagues were with him and were not the ones stabbed, on the account so far.
The number that will stay attached to the case is seven: seven wounds, at about 4:30pm, at a pump that was not supposed to be selling. Puri has asked Maharashtra for strict action. The arrests say the local police have already named a dealer, his mother, and two others. The charge has to survive a court in Hingoli.
