Indian equity markets closed higher for a sixth consecutive session on November 5, 2026. The BSE Sensex rose 2,008.61 points, or 2.60 percent, to finish at 79,310.01. The NSE Nifty gained 576 points, or 2.40 percent, to close at 24,536.60. Over the six sessions the Sensex has advanced more than 6,000 points and the Nifty more than 1,800 points.
Traders attributed the move to a decline in crude oil prices and to the U.S. midterm results, in which Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress. Brent crude traded near $96 a barrel. Lower energy costs reduce India’s import bill and ease pressure on the current account. Foreign institutional investors had bought equities worth ₹7,284 crore the previous day, according to exchange data.
Gains were broad. Bajaj Finance rose 7.77 percent, InterGlobe Aviation 5.80 percent, ICICI Bank 5.29 percent and Maruti 5.28 percent. A handful of stocks, including NTPC and Bharat Electronics, lagged. The rally followed earlier sessions in which markets had already begun to price in softer oil and a possible change in the trajectory of the conflict involving Iran.
The U.S. election outcome adds a second factor. Democratic majorities in Congress increase the chance of policy adjustments that could affect energy markets and sanctions. Indian markets have historically moved with global risk appetite and with the price of crude. The combination of lower oil and the election result produced the sixth straight advance.
The next sessions will test whether the gains hold once more detailed information on U.S. policy emerges and once global technology shares, which fell sharply on November 5, feed into Asian trading. For now the Indian benchmarks have recorded their strongest multi-day run in weeks, driven by the oil price and the shift in Washington.
