India women take fifth at the FIH World Cup, best finish since 1974
A 3-1 win over world No. 5 Germany in Amstelveen ended a 52-year wait to match that standard. Ishika scored in the 43rd minute. Navneet Kaur added two more. The side lost only once, 0-2 to the Netherlands.

The Indian women's hockey team beat Germany 3-1 in Amstelveen on Thursday and finished fifth at the FIH World Cup. That is the side's best placing since fourth at the first women's World Cup in 1974 under Ajinder Kaur. World No. 9 India beat world No. 5 Germany in a classification match at Wagener Stadium.
The first 30 minutes produced no goal. German keeper Finja Starck made three saves from Navneet Kaur and Salima Tete. The break came in the 43rd minute. Neha Goyal won the ball and found Ishika. Ishika ran at the defence and finished. A minute later Navneet scored from a penalty corner. In the 47th minute she scored again. Lynn Krings pulled one back in the 59th. India held the last minute.
Neha Goyal was named player of the match. She said the Asian Games next month would be another hard test. The current squad includes 11 World Cup debutants. Across six matches India recorded two wins, three draws and one defeat. The defeat was 0-2 to Olympic champions and hosts the Netherlands.
The scoring drought before Thursday was real. India had gone more than 230 minutes without a goal since the South Africa game. Ishika's strike ended that run and Germany did not recover shape. Navneet's two goals in four minutes turned a tight classification into a result.
Fifth is not a medal. It is a number the programme can take into the Asian Games without apology. The 1974 fourth place sat in a different sport, with different funding and a different player pool. Comparing the two is a calendar fact, not a claim that the sides are equal.
The men's team, on the same continent the next day, lost a shoot-out to Belgium and finished eighth. The two results will be read together at home. The women's fifth is the cleaner line. One loss in six matches, a win over a higher-ranked European side, and a 52-year mark moved.
What follows is the Asian Games list and whether the 11 debutants stay in the eleven. Thursday's film is a first goal after a long blank, a captain-in-all-but-name midfielder winning the ball, and a striker who scored twice in four minutes. That is enough to take into September.
