India beat Germany 3-1 in the fifth-place match of the 2026 Women's FIH Hockey World Cup at Wagener Stadium on Thursday. The result is the Indian women's best finish at the tournament since they came fourth in the first women's World Cup in 1974.
Ishika broke a long quiet spell in the 43rd minute. Navneet Kaur scored in the 44th minute from a penalty corner and again in the 47th. Lynn Krings pulled one back for Germany in the 59th. India survived a German penalty corner with 12 seconds left. Neha Goyal was named player of the match.
The first 30 minutes produced no goals. Finja Starck, the German goalkeeper, stopped three chances in a row after Navneet and Salima Tete worked the circle. India had gone more than 230 minutes without a goal against Germany-level defences in this tournament after the South Africa game. Ishika ended that run with a reverse-lift after Neha won the ball and released her.
How the six matches broke down
India finished with two wins, three draws and one defeat. The defeat was 0-2 against the Netherlands, the hosts and Olympic champions. The draws were 2-2 with China, a result against England, and a goalless game with Australia that ended the semi-final route. The other win was 6-1 against South Africa, India's largest margin at an FIH World Cup.
The team arrived ranked ninth. Germany arrived ranked fifth. Eleven players were at a World Cup for the first time. That mix is why the fifth-place line has weight. A side with that many debutants held China, England and Australia and then beat a higher-ranked European team in the classification game.
Neha said after the match that the group had wanted the semi-final and the final and would take fifth. She also pointed at the Asian Games, which sit next on the calendar. The World Cup finish does not seed those Games on its own. It does give the staff a set of minutes against China, Australia, England, the Netherlands and Germany to take into that camp.
What fifth place changes
Indian women's hockey has lived for years in a gap between Commonwealth medals and a missing World Cup step. Fourth in 1974 was the mark no later squad had matched. Fifth in 2026 is the first time the line has moved in 52 years. It is not a medal. It is a recorded finish that selectors and federations will quote when they argue for central contracts and for the next overseas block.
Navneet's two goals in four minutes were the scoreboard event. Ishika's first goal was the mood event. The late penalty-corner defence was the professional event. Those three sequences are what the staff will replay. Germany had more of the last quarter. India had the three finishes that counted.
The next test is whether this group stays together through the Asian Games. Debutants who played six World Cup matches now have a ranking night and a Germany tape. That is a different side from the one that landed in the Netherlands.
