India wins an eighth Women's Asia Cup and leaves the trophy on the podium

India beat Sri Lanka by 72 runs at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday and then declined to collect the Women's Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. The Asian Cricket Council president, who is also Pakistan's interior minister and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, presented the runners-up cheque to Chamari Athapaththu and left. India held its own medal ceremony on the sidelines with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajeev Shukla.

The cricket was straightforward. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma put on 129 for the first wicket. India posted 183 for 5. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 111. The crowd was 16,339, most of them India supporters. They did not see Harmanpreet Kaur lift the cup. The presentation ran almost an hour late. Unlike the men's final last year, Naqvi did not take the trophy with him when he walked off.

Saikia put the decision on the record the same night. "Our men's team won the Asia Cup a year and a half ago. And our whole situation, since the April 2025 Pahalgam incident, changed after that," he told IANS. The government policy, he said, is that India plays every country in multinational events. "But that doesn't mean we will follow every condition laid out for us. Our military conflict is still ongoing. One of the main leaders who is working against the interests of our country; we can't receive the trophy from him." He called it solidarity with the men's team.

Coach Amol Muzumdar was shorter. The stand had been taken by the BCCI, he said, and the team stood by it. "For us, this tournament is over, we are the champions." Saikia later added that the position had been sent to the ACC in advance. It was an institutional decision, he said, and it would not have been appropriate to receive the trophy "in a proposed manner."

The men's precedent was messier. After India beat Pakistan in the 2025 Asia Cup final the players waited more than an hour. Handshakes had already been refused during that tournament. This time there was no Pakistan team on the field. The objection was the man holding the cup. Naqvi sat with Shukla and Saikia during the match. He still did the runners-up presentation. India stayed in a circle outside the dressing room while that part of the ceremony ran.

The title is India's eighth in the women's event, a record. That fact will go in the almanack next to a sentence about a cup that was not accepted. ACC events will keep placing Naqvi on the podium for as long as he holds the chair. BCCI policy now treats that as a condition India will not meet. The players still have to turn up. They do not have to shake the hand that gives them the silverware.

None of this changes the score. Mandhana and Verma built the total. The bowlers finished the job. Kaur's side is the champion of Asia for another cycle. The metal stayed on the table.
