The Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth Rs 53,866.50 crore on 2 November 2026 for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata will build five of the ships. Goa Shipyard Limited will build the remaining three. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh attended the signing at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi. The Cabinet Committee on Security had approved the project on 29 October.
This is the first programme in which warships designed by the Indian Navy will be built by defence public sector undertakings selected through a competitive process. Previous corvette and frigate programmes often went to nominated yards. The competitive route is intended to improve efficiency and cost control while keeping production inside the public sector.
The corvettes are planned to displace around 2,000 tonnes and reach speeds of about 30 knots. They will carry advanced missiles, weapons, and sensor suites for operations in the air, surface, and sub-surface domains. Roles include anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, coastal defence, littoral combat, maritime surveillance, and protection of sea lanes. They will complement the existing four Kamorta-class corvettes already in service.
Construction is expected to generate roughly 72 lakh person-days of employment at the shipyards and another 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and micro, small, and medium enterprises over the next ten years. The programme also requires greater use of indigenous materials, equipment, and technologies, supporting the government’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The total contract value of Rs 53,866.50 crore covers the full procurement cost. Earlier estimates had placed the project above Rs 40,000 crore before final negotiations. The vessels will be built to Indian Navy design standards rather than licensed foreign drawings. Delivery timelines have not been publicly detailed, but multi-year construction programmes of this scale typically stretch across the rest of the decade.
GRSE and GSL have prior experience with corvettes and other surface combatants. GRSE built the Kamorta-class anti-submarine warfare corvettes. GSL has constructed offshore patrol vessels and other vessels for the Navy and Coast Guard. The competitive selection between the two yards is new for a major surface combatant class.
The ships will strengthen the Navy’s ability to operate in the Indian Ocean Region, where surface and subsurface threats continue to evolve. Coastal and littoral roles matter for surveillance and rapid response along India’s long coastline. The sensor and missile fit will determine how effectively they can integrate with larger destroyers and frigates already in the fleet.
Officials have not released detailed specifications on the exact missile types, radar models, or sonar systems. Those choices will be finalised during detailed design and construction. The emphasis on indigenous content is expected to involve Indian private firms and MSMEs for subsystems, engines, weapons integration, and electronics.
The contracts mark a concrete step in the Navy’s long-term force structure plans. Eight additional multi-role corvettes add numbers and capability without the cost or timeline of larger destroyers. How the competitive model performs on cost, schedule, and quality will influence future surface ship awards.
For now, the signed agreements fix the builders, the total value, the number of ships, and the basic design origin. Yard capacity, supply-chain readiness for indigenous components, and integration of weapons and sensors will determine when the first vessels enter service.
