India gives in-principle consent for the 2027 South Asian Games in Pakistan

India has given in-principle consent to send a team to the 2027 South Asian Games in Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Olympic Association. Secretary general Khalid Mehmood said India was represented at a South Asian Olympic Council meeting, accepted the invitation, and will share contingent details in January 2027. Neither the Indian Olympic Association nor the sports ministry has issued a matching public note.

The Games are scheduled from 3 or 4 April to 11 April 2027 in Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar. Wikipedia and Pakistani briefings list 28 sports, with extra demonstration codes including esports, lacrosse and cue sports, and an expected field of about 4,200 athletes from seven countries. Pakistan last hosted in Islamabad from 29 March to 7 April 2004. The 2027 edition would be the first time the event is staged outside the capital.

The date matters because it would be the first time a sizeable Indian sports contingent travels to Pakistan since the April 2025 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. India's written sports policy, restated by the ministry on 5 May 2026, bars bilateral events in each other's country and still exempts multi-nation championships such as the Olympics, Asian Games and ICC tournaments. The South Asian Games sit in that second column if New Delhi treats them as a continental meet rather than a bilateral visit.

Mehmood's wording is careful. Consent at "the relevant regional sporting level" is not a visa list. Contingent size, sport-by-sport entries and security arrangements remain open until January. Pakistani officials, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, have already held a preparation review covering venues, transport, hotels and medical cover. Peshawar replaced Faisalabad as a host city in late August when the dates moved to April.

Security will decide whether the in-principle yes becomes a team on a plane. Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar each carry different risk profiles. Indian federations will want written guarantees on movement, hotels and venue perimeters before they name athletes. The ministry's May memorandum also said India wants to be a host of large events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, and that visa rules for visiting officials should be simpler. That hosting ambition cuts both ways. Refusing a regional Games while asking to host the world is a harder argument.

The South Asian Games have been postponed more than once. An earlier slot in 2023 slipped to 2024, then to January 2026, then to April 2027. That history is why January 2027, not this week's statement, is the real checkpoint. If India files entries then, the political decision is done. If it does not, Mehmood's sentence becomes a line in a press note.

For athletes the distinction is practical. A shooter or wrestler who needs ranking points will want the trip. A cricket board that already plays Pakistan in ICC events will not set the tone. The test is whether the sports ministry treats the South Asian Games as the multi-nation exemption it wrote down in May, or as a bilateral visit by another name. Until New Delhi says so in its own voice, the consent sits where Mehmood left it: in principle, and incomplete.
