India finished fourth at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze, 85 medals in all. The games closed on Sunday at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. China topped the table for a twelfth straight edition, with 169 gold, 89 silver and 83 bronze, 341 medals, its best haul at an overseas Asian Games. Host Japan was second with 83 gold and 269 medals. South Korea was third with 39 gold and 150 medals. India stood ahead of Uzbekistan, Iran and Thailand.
The 85-medal total is 21 below the Hangzhou tally and still India's second-best Asian Games haul. The contingent was 495 athletes in 36 sports. Trap shooter Neeru Dhanda, who won two golds and a silver, carried the flag at the close. She is the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold in trap. The mixed trap pair of Dhanda and Kynan Chenai set an Asian record. That record, and the flag, are the individual markers the closing ceremony put on the Indian campaign.
Golds that had not been won before
Archery supplied five Indian golds, the largest stack from one sport. Kumkum Anil Mohod became the first Indian woman to win individual recurve gold. The women's recurve team broke a South Korean hold on the event that had lasted 28 years. Pranavi Urs won India's first golf gold at the Asian Games. The men's hockey team defended its title, a first successful defence, and with it took a place at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Boxing produced three golds. Lovlina Borgohain became the second Indian woman, after Mary Kom, to win an Asian Games boxing gold. Both cricket teams won gold, a double India had not posted at this games before.
Those lines are the information a medal table does not carry. Fourth place with 21 gold is a weaker gold rate than Hangzhou even where the all-medal number remains historically high. A reader comparing only the 85 will miss the drop of 21 medals and the list of firsts inside the 21 golds. The firsts are real. The drop against the previous edition is also real. Both belong in the same paragraph.
The table above India
China's 169 golds are more than double Japan's 83 and more than four times Korea's 39. India's 21 golds are about half of Korea's. The gap to third is 18 golds, not a handful of finals. Closing the gap at the next edition means finals in sports that already return medals, archery and shooting, and finals in sports where India still exits early. The hockey defence and the cricket double are team points that do not scale. One hockey gold is one gold, however long the tournament.
Dhanda's two trap golds plus a silver make her the leading individual of the Indian close. Mohod's recurve gold and the team gold against a 28-year Korean run are the archery fact. Urs's golf gold is a single ticket in a sport India has not mined at this level. Borgohain's boxing gold sits next to Kom's and does not, by itself, rebuild a boxing programme.
What the close does not settle
Qualification for Los Angeles in men's hockey is the consequence that outlasts the medal ceremony. The other firsts are records and precedents. They do not fund the next cycle. India's sports ministry had not, in the reports of the closing, published a sport-by-sport cost against the 21 golds. The public accounting on Monday is the table: fourth, 85 medals, 21 golds, 21 fewer than Hangzhou, 495 athletes, 36 sports, China 12 editions clear at the top.
Aichi-Nagoya is over. The next Asian Games number India will be judged against is 85, with the gold line at 21 held up next to it. Dhanda walked the flag out. The golds that had never been Indian before are on the list. The distance to Korea's 39 is the distance that fourth place still contains.
