The Union Cabinet on November 4, 2026, approved a scheme that gives 75 percent of Agniveers who are not absorbed into the regular forces after their four-year tenure the option of a two-year extension.
Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani announced the decision. The extension is subject to willingness and selection criteria. Those who complete the additional period and meet the standards can be considered for regular service. The scheme applies to the Army, Navy and Air Force under the Agnipath recruitment model introduced in 2022.
Agnipath was designed to lower the average age of the armed forces and reduce long-term pension liabilities. Recruits serve four years, after which up to 25 percent can be retained as regular soldiers. The remaining 75 percent leave with a lump-sum package. Critics have argued that the short tenure limits skill development and that the exit of large numbers creates employment pressure.
The new extension addresses part of that criticism. It does not guarantee absorption. It creates an additional window for those who demonstrate competence and wish to continue. The Cabinet decision follows earlier reviews of the scheme's first cohorts.
Defence officials have described the measure as a way to retain trained personnel without immediately expanding the regular cadre. The two-year period allows further evaluation before a permanent decision. Selection remains competitive.
The announcement comes as the services continue to induct new batches under Agnipath. Training pipelines and unit establishments are adjusting to the shorter initial tenures. The extension option gives commanders a tool to keep personnel who have acquired specialised skills.
No figure has been released for the number of Agniveers who will take up the extension. The scheme is open to those completing their four-year term who are not selected in the initial 25 percent retention. Implementation details, including the exact selection process and pay scales during the extension, are expected in subsequent orders from the Ministry of Defence.
The decision does not alter the core structure of Agnipath. Four years remains the default term. The extension is an optional bridge for a defined share of the cohort. It preserves the original intent of a younger force while responding to concerns about abrupt exits.
Parliament is not in session. The Cabinet approval allows the services to begin planning for the first groups that will become eligible. Further clarification on eligibility windows and the criteria for conversion to regular service is expected from service headquarters in the coming weeks.
