Leaders of the INDIA bloc gathered tens of thousands of supporters at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on Sunday, 1 November 2026, in the largest opposition mobilisation in recent years. The rally demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities in the 2024 general election.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, told the crowd that the government had removed 13.3 crore names from the voter list. He described this as one in every seven Indians and 15 percent of the electorate. Gandhi said the 2024 election was illegal and stolen, citing the Election Commission's own figures. He stated that after Kumar leaves, legal action would follow against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for what he called vote theft. Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress president, said the alliance would continue fighting until Kumar goes. Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, and leaders from more than 19 parties addressed the gathering or joined the march.
The demonstration began around 12:45 pm. Senior leaders boarded open-top buses from the Minto Road-Connaught Place area and proceeded to Ramlila Maidan. Police estimates placed the crowd at roughly 50,000. Flags of the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and Left parties filled the ground. The event followed a symbolic "public impeachment" of Kumar at Kharge's residence the previous day. Nationwide protests calling for Kumar's exit have run since early October.
The opposition alleges that the Special Intensive Revision disproportionately removed names of women, youth, and Dalits under the categories of absent, shifted, or dead. An Indian Express investigation reported that Election Commissioners SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded written dissents at least 14 times between November 2025 and August 2026 and wrote to the Cabinet Secretary. The BJP has rejected the claims and organised counter-rallies. It has accused Gandhi of acting at the behest of foreign powers to create disorder.
Traffic restrictions around Ramlila Maidan and central Delhi ran from 10 am to 5 pm. Traders in nearby markets reported closures and estimated losses in the thousands of crores, though exact figures remain disputed. The rally forms part of a sustained campaign that began after the opposition lost the 2024 election by a narrow margin. Gandhi has repeatedly stated that the difference between the NDA and the INDIA bloc was only 3 percent.
Kumar has not resigned. The Election Commission has defended the revision as a routine cleaning of rolls. No court has ruled on the opposition's allegations of systematic deletion. The next general election is due in 2029. State elections continue in the interim, and the opposition has signalled that the demand for Kumar's removal will remain a central issue in those campaigns.
The size of the Ramlila Maidan gathering demonstrates that the INDIA bloc can still mobilise large numbers in the capital despite internal differences. Whether that mobilisation translates into sustained pressure on the Election Commission or into electoral gains will depend on how voters respond in the coming state polls and how the government and the Commission answer the specific claims about the 13.3 crore deletions.
