Leaders of the INDIA bloc gathered at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on 1 November 2026 for a “Chalo Dilli” rally that demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, told the crowd that Kumar had committed treason by “stealing the voice of citizens.” He said Kumar would be removed from office and would go to jail. Gandhi added that legal action would follow against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah after Kumar’s removal. “Narendra Modi cannot go anywhere. Even if he wants to leave, we will not let him go,” he stated.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the fight would continue until Kumar leaves. Other speakers included Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee and Mehbooba Mufti. The march began from the Minto Road-Connaught Place area and ended at the maidan. Organisers described the event as the largest opposition mobilisation in recent years.
The opposition alleges that the Special Intensive Revision removed 13.3 crore names, or roughly 15 percent of the electorate, many listed as absent, shifted or dead. Gandhi cited a 3 percent gap between the NDA and the INDIA bloc in the 2024 election and argued that the deletions rendered the result illegitimate. The Election Commission has defended the revision as a routine cleaning of rolls.
The Bharatiya Janata Party organised parallel events and accused the opposition of attempting to create anarchy. Party spokespersons said Gandhi was acting at the behest of foreign interests. No major violence was reported at the Ramlila Maidan gathering. Delhi police managed traffic and security around the designated protest site.
The Special Intensive Revision has been under way in multiple states. Opposition parties have filed petitions and held smaller protests in state capitals. The Ramlila Maidan event consolidated those efforts into a single national platform. Attendance figures were not independently verified; organisers claimed a large turnout while police estimates were lower.
Kumar has not publicly responded to the specific jail threat. The Election Commission has previously stated that deletions follow due process and that affected voters can apply for re-inclusion. Opposition leaders have pointed to discrepancies in certain constituencies as evidence of selective removal.
The rally occurred two days before the U.S. midterm elections, a timing that kept international attention elsewhere while domestic coverage focused on the Delhi gathering. Indian television channels carried live footage of the speeches. Social-media clips of Gandhi’s remarks circulated widely on 1 and 2 November.
State units of the INDIA bloc have announced follow-up programmes. The demand for Kumar’s resignation is expected to feature in parliamentary sessions and further court challenges. The Election Commission continues the revision process according to its published schedule.
The event marks the most coordinated public challenge to the current Chief Election Commissioner since the 2024 general election. Whether the mobilisation translates into sustained pressure or remains a single-day demonstration will depend on subsequent actions by the participating parties.
