Students at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi staged a rare protest on 25 August 2026 after the death by suicide of a 31-year-old MSc Physics student, the eighth such case at the institute since 2023.
Protesters said they had gathered because eight deaths had already occurred and the institutional response remained inadequate. The demonstration focused on mental-health services, academic pressure and the absence of timely intervention mechanisms.
IIT Delhi has faced repeated questions about student welfare after a series of suicides. Campus groups have previously called for more counsellors, reduced competitive intensity and clearer protocols when a student shows signs of distress. The latest protest brought those demands into the open in a way the institute has rarely seen.
