IIT Bombay and Imperial College London said on 7 September that they have turned years of joint papers into a named partnership. The first priorities are clean technology and medical technology. The agreement covers joint research programmes, academic workshops, student entrepreneurship, placements and exchanges in Mumbai and London, and shared data.
Professor Shireesh Kedare, director of IIT Bombay, called it a step that uses the two campuses together rather than as occasional co-authors. Professor Peter Haynes, Imperial's provost and deputy president, said the work should matter in India and the United Kingdom and that it sits inside a wider science relationship between the two countries.
The statement listed projects already running. One looks at remote monitoring of upper-limb movement for diagnosis, physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Another uses data for power-sector questions in India: demand flexibility, grid strength, decarbonisation and price. A third pairs quantum computing with biotechnology to model plant and soil-microbe behaviour, with an eye on crops that hold up in a hotter climate. Water management, energy security, disease modelling and climate science are the broader headings.
A partnership announcement is easy to write and hard to staff. The test over the next year is whether the exchanges actually move students and whether the three named projects publish or file anything that did not exist as a courtesy memorandum. Kedare and Haynes have put their names on a list that can be checked against those outputs.
