Hurricane Simon Pounds Mexico’s Pacific Coast as Category 3 Storm

Hurricane Simon made landfall-level impacts along Mexico’s Pacific coast as a Category 3 storm on Sunday. Its eye stayed just offshore while the strongest winds and heaviest rain hit communities between the Sierra Madre mountains and the sea.

The storm affected resorts and vulnerable coastal towns in the region around Puerto Vallarta and further south. Authorities issued warnings for flooding, landslides and high surf. Evacuations took place in some low-lying areas before the worst conditions arrived.

Simon is one of several tropical systems active in the eastern Pacific this season, which has already set records for activity. A separate former tropical storm, Rachel, generated powerful waves that battered Southern California earlier in the period. In the Atlantic, Hurricane Isaias moved through the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama, with remnants causing flooding in North Carolina.

Mexican civil protection agencies reported damage to infrastructure and some coastal properties. Power outages occurred in affected municipalities. No large-scale casualty figures were released in initial reports, though search teams checked isolated areas after the storm passed.

The National Hurricane Center tracked Simon as it moved parallel to the coast. Forecasts indicated weakening once the system moved over cooler water or inland terrain. Tourism operators in popular Pacific destinations adjusted schedules and moved guests from exposed properties.

Mexico’s Pacific hurricane season typically peaks in September and October. Simon follows earlier storms that brought heavy rain to the same coastline. Local governments have activated emergency shelters and are assessing damage to roads and bridges once conditions improve.
