Hurricane Isaias struck Florida's Gulf Coast as a Category 2 storm on Friday, October 9, 2026, near Destin. At least four people died in the storm and its aftermath. The system tore away rooftops, collapsed sections of buildings, and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers across the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama before weakening and moving north.
PowerOutage.com tracked roughly 356,000 customers still without electricity in southern Alabama and northwestern Florida by mid-afternoon Sunday. At peak, the storm left nearly 800,000 homes and businesses in the dark. Utility crews worked through downed lines and trees. Florida Power & Light and other providers reported extensive damage to distribution systems.
Damage was concentrated in Milton, Pensacola, Destin, Gulf Breeze and Fort Walton Beach. Apartment complexes lost entire roofs. A gas station canopy in East Milton was ripped apart. A boathouse in Destin was flattened. An airplane at Peter Prince Field in Milton sustained visible damage. Southern Raceway, a dirt track in Milton, saw grandstands thrown onto the racing surface and roofs removed from buildings. Track operators said the facility would require extensive cleanup before any return to events.
Residents in Milton salvaged goods from a convenience store whose roof had been torn off. In Pensacola, the Rest and Relax Inn lost part of its roof, leaving debris in hallways and outside rooms. Boats were washed ashore in Fort Walton Beach and Navarre Beach. Trees blocked streets in downtown Pensacola. Aerial images showed rows of homes with missing siding and exposed interiors.
The storm made landfall with sustained winds near 100 mph in places. After moving inland it became a post-tropical cyclone. Heavy rain and flooding risks shifted to the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic. Rivers overflowed in North Carolina, prompting water rescues. The National Weather Service issued flash flood and tornado watches across the path of the remnants.
Local officials suspended classes and evacuated low-lying areas before landfall. President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, dealing with a separate Pacific storm, was not directly involved, but US governors in Florida and Alabama coordinated state responses. Search and recovery teams moved into the hardest-hit neighbourhoods once winds dropped.
Isaias was the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season to reach Category 2 strength at landfall. Its rapid intensification and track into the Panhandle produced wind damage typical of that category: structural failure on older buildings, widespread tree loss, and prolonged outages. Coastal surge damaged beachfront properties in Pensacola Beach and Navarre.
By Sunday, assessment teams were still counting the full extent of uninsured losses. Some residents returned to homes with standing water or missing walls. Others stayed with relatives while crews cleared roads. The four confirmed deaths occurred from storm-related incidents, including one linked to falling trees or structural collapse. Exact circumstances were still under review by local medical examiners.
The system continued to produce rain bands as it tracked north. Flooding closed secondary roads in the Appalachians. Power restoration in Florida and Alabama was projected to take several more days in the most damaged feeders. Insurance claims began arriving at adjusters on Saturday. For communities that have faced multiple Gulf storms in recent years, the combination of wind, surge and prolonged outages adds another round of rebuilding costs before the full winter season.
