Hubble's new N44 frame counts half a million stars around a 210-light-year hole
Programme 14689, led by Dimitrios Gouliermis, catalogued nearly 30,000 pre-main-sequence stars inside LHA 120-N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The central superbubble is about 210 by 140 light-years. The nebula sits 160,000 light-years away in Dorado.

A Hubble Space Telescope mosaic of LHA 120-N44, released in the first week of September, shows a hole 210 by 140 light-years across at the centre of a dusty shell. The nebula lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud, in the constellation Dorado, about 160,000 light-years from Earth. Karl Henize catalogued its parts in the 1950s. The new work is a census, not a postcard.
Observing programme 14689, with Dimitrios Gouliermis as principal investigator, used Hubble to count stars in the cluster and along the line of sight. The catalogue holds nearly half a million objects. Almost 30,000 of them are pre-main-sequence stars, objects that have not yet begun fusing hydrogen in their cores. That number is the result the image is built to carry. A pretty void is easy to photograph. A list of 30,000 stars that are still contracting is not.
The void itself is a superbubble. The bright stars now sitting in the middle blew the gas out with winds and supernovae. The expelled material piled into the bright rim. A smaller bubble, N44F, sits near the upper right of the frame and is the work of a single hot star. Age gaps of about five million years between stars inside the hole and stars on the rim point to more than one burst of star formation, each compressing the next shell.
An older Hubble view had already put the hole near 250 light-years wide and the whole N44 complex near 1,000 light-years across. The 2026 product tightens the inner measurements to 210 by 140 light-years and attaches the stellar catalogue. One supernova remnant is known near the superbubble. That is not enough, on its own, to explain a cavity this wide. The combined winds of the central cluster remain the main account.
Pre-main-sequence counts matter because they are a clock. Stars that have not ignited hydrogen are young. A field that holds 30,000 of them is still forming stars after the blast that opened the hole. N44 is not a dead bubble with a pretty rim. It is a region where the last generation of massive stars cleared a space and the next generation is already on the books.
The Large Magellanic Cloud is close enough for Hubble to separate those young stars from the older field and from Milky Way interlopers in front of the Cloud. That is why the programme was flown on Hubble rather than on a smaller telescope. The half-million-object catalogue is the deliverable. The colour image is how the programme talks to everyone else.
Readers who only see the hole should keep the two numbers beside it: 210 by 140 light-years for the cavity, and nearly 30,000 stars that have not yet switched on. The first number is the scar. The second is the work still under way.
