Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant at the Washington, D.C.-area home of Representative Ilhan Omar early on Monday, October 12. The Department of Justice confirmed that the warrant was judicially authorized and that the search formed part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.
Neighbors reported agents arriving around 4:30 a.m. with a large truck. Investigators removed boxes from the residence. Omar later posted that she was unharmed and described the search as an escalation in what she called a campaign of political intimidation. She wrote that she would not be silenced.
The Justice Department statement said only that Homeland Security Investigations had executed the warrant secured by the department. Officials did not specify the exact focus of the inquiry. Reporting based on people familiar with the matter indicated that the probe includes questions about Omar’s family’s immigration paperwork from the 1990s, when she arrived in the United States as a refugee. Other lines of inquiry have touched on her finances, campaign funds, and contacts with a foreign national.
Vice President JD Vance had signaled months earlier that the administration was examining immigration-related allegations against Omar, which she has denied. The search occurred within the traditional 60-day window before an election during which the Justice Department has historically avoided overt investigative steps involving candidates. Omar is seeking reelection in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
The Minnesota Democrat has been a frequent target of criticism from President Trump and members of his administration. She has repeatedly rejected claims about her immigration history and finances as baseless. Her office called the search an attempt to weaponize federal law enforcement against political opponents.
Democrats in Congress criticized the timing and the action. Some described it as an abuse of power. Republican officials and conservative outlets framed it as a legitimate criminal investigation into long-standing questions about paperwork submitted on Omar’s behalf when she was a child.
The search marks a clear escalation. Previous public comments from administration officials had pointed to an inquiry, but no court-authorized search of a sitting member of Congress’s home had been reported until Monday. The investigation has included whistleblower complaints, according to one official familiar with the case.
Omar represents a heavily Democratic district that includes Minneapolis. She was first elected in 2018 and has been one of the more prominent progressive voices in the House. The outcome of the investigation, and whether any charges result, remains unknown. The Justice Department has not released further details beyond confirming the warrant and the ongoing nature of the probe.
The episode adds a new element to the already tense relationship between the Trump administration and Democratic lawmakers who have opposed its immigration and foreign-policy positions. How the investigation proceeds, and how both sides present it to voters in the final weeks before the midterms, will shape the political consequences of Monday’s search.
