Himalayan glaciers now lose mass 65 percent faster than a decade ago
A Systemiq-led report with ICIMOD and Indian mountain institutes warns the Hindu Kush Himalaya could shed up to 80 percent of today’s ice by 2100, with peak meltwater due around mid-century.

Himalayan glaciers are losing mass 65 percent faster than they did ten years ago, according to a report released this month by the consultancy Systemiq with the Integrated Mountain Initiative. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development and India’s G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment contributed. On present paths, the authors say the Hindu Kush Himalaya could lose up to 80 percent of its current glacier volume by 2100.
The timing is not abstract. In late August a glacier collapsed on the Nepal-Tibet border and sent landslides and flash floods down the valleys. Authorities have confirmed at least 1,300 deaths. More than 5,300 people remain listed as missing across Nepal and China’s Tibet region. The new paper treats that disaster as a preview of what faster melt does when ice sits above steep, crowded catchments.
Most Himalayan river basins are heading toward “peak water” around mid-century. That is the year when meltwater discharge stops rising and begins to fall because the ice reserve itself is shrinking. The Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra all depend on that storage. Once the peak passes, dry-season flows decline even if monsoon rain holds. The report frames that shift as a slow change in the region’s natural reservoir, not a single flood season.
Black carbon is given unusual weight. The authors attribute about one third of Himalayan glacier mass loss to soot that drifts up from the plains and darkens the snow. Brick kilns are named as a main source. Unlike the carbon dioxide that warms the planet from far away, black carbon is a lever governments in the region can pull on their own territory. Cut the soot, and some of the extra melt slows, even if global temperature keeps rising.
The monitoring gap is blunt. Only about 21 of an estimated 40,000 glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya, a chain that runs from Afghanistan to Myanmar, are measured on the ground. India monitors 16 or 17 of them. Permafrost, which holds slopes together when it stays frozen, is tracked even less. Close to 200 glacial lakes in India have been classed as high risk. Fifty-six of those sit in the “very high risk” band after a 2025 assessment of 189 lakes. The dams that hold those lakes are often loose rock and ice.
The report also ties the mountains to the Indian economy. About 18 percent of India’s land is Himalayan. The same belt accounts for roughly 35 percent of recorded disasters and more than 20 percent of GDP through farming, hydropower, pilgrimage and towns that sit on the rivers. Lord Nicholas Stern, who chairs the Grantham Research Institute, called the range national and international infrastructure that needs resilience spending now.
Arushi Chopra, a senior director at Systemiq and the lead author, told interviewers the range is approaching a critical point, with millions of lives and livelihoods exposed. She pointed to three pressures at once: warming generated outside the region, soot from the plains, and a growth model that puts roads, dams and towns against slopes that are already moving.
None of the numbers in the paper is a forecast of a single year’s flood. They are rates and inventories. Melt 65 percent faster than a decade ago. Twenty-one glaciers measured out of 40,000. Fifty-six Indian lakes in the top risk class. Peak water by mid-century. Up to four fifths of today’s ice gone by 2100 if the path holds. The August collapse showed what happens when one of those inventories fails in a single night. The policy question the authors leave on the table is whether brick-kiln soot and lake-watch networks can be fixed faster than the ice is leaving.
