Heavy rainfall on 24 and 25 August 2026 produced widespread waterlogging across Delhi and the National Capital Region, forcing schools and many shops to close and prompting a work-from-home advisory in Gurugram.
In Gurugram at least 12 school buses were submerged, leaving children stranded for hours. Major roads including stretches of NH-48 near Narsinghpur became impassable. Parts of Lutyens’ Delhi, Mathura Road, Connaught Place, Bhairon Marg, ITO and the Zakhira underpass recorded significant flooding.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for all 11 districts of Delhi. Forecasts called for continued cloudy skies, thunderstorms and further heavy rain through the day. Some locations recorded close to 67 mm of rain in a short period.
Flight operations at Delhi airports faced delays and cancellations the previous day, with nearly 400 flights affected. The latest spell of rain has again exposed the limits of the region’s drainage infrastructure, a recurring monsoon problem that local governments have yet to resolve at scale.
Authorities in Gurugram advised corporate offices and educational institutions to adopt work-from-home arrangements for 25 August. Similar disruptions have occurred multiple times this monsoon season, each time producing temporary shutdowns and public criticism of civic planning.
The immediate consequence is lost school days, disrupted commuting and economic costs for small businesses forced to close. Longer-term, the repeated failures keep the political pressure on municipal and state administrations to accelerate drainage and flood-management projects before the next monsoon cycle.
