Harry Kane became the fastest player to 100 Bundesliga goals on Friday night, reaching the mark in his 98th league appearance for Bayern Munich. The previous record sat with Dieter Müller, who needed 129 games for Cologne in the 1970s. The gap is 31 matches, almost a full German season.
The hundredth goal was a penalty in the 39th minute after Tom Rothe brought down Michael Olise. Kane put the kick in the corner. In the 54th minute he headed Olise’s cross for number 101. Bayern beat Union Berlin 7-0. Olise finished with a hat-trick. Jamal Musiala opened the scoring in the 18th minute from about 20 yards after Alphonso Davies worked the left. Ismael Saibari also scored. Bayern wore a special kit for Oktoberfest and kept an unbeaten start to the league season.
Kane told the league’s cameras he was proud to have a century in a second country after doing the same in the Premier League. He thanked the team, the club, the staff and the players who create chances, naming Olise, Luis Díaz and Musiala. On Sky after the match he was asked if he knew he held the speed record. He asked, “For what?” The presenter, Nele Ocik, explained the 98-against-129 comparison. Kane smiled and said they should keep scoring.
The raw rate is the story that will travel. One hundred league goals in 98 games is a number German football has not printed before. Context still matters. Kane arrived from Tottenham in 2023 as a finished centre-forward in a side built to feed him. Müller scored in a different tactical era, on different pitches, with different sports science. The record book does not adjust for that. It only counts appearances and goals. On that ledger Kane is first.
All-competitions numbers from the same night put him on 152 goals in 154 games since the move to Munich, or 156 in 156 if some tallies include England fixtures in the same running count. Different desks are using slightly different denominators. The league record is clean: 100 Bundesliga goals, 98 Bundesliga matches, two on the night against Union.
Union Berlin were a convenient opponent for a record chase and a poor one for a club that has to live with the scoreline. A 7-0 home or away hiding in September changes how a dressing room hears the next team talk. For Bayern the useful residue is simpler. The attack that stalled in tougher midweek or away league games against Elversberg and Schalke found the same patterns again: Davies wide, Olise between the lines, Kane at the penalty spot and then at the near post.
Kane is 33. The next landmarks are ordinary ones, 125 and 150 in the league, and whatever the club asks of him in Europe. The unusual landmark is already done. No one else has reached 100 Bundesliga goals in fewer than 98 games. That sentence will sit in the record section after the Oktoberfest shirts have been folded away.
