Hakeem Jeffries of New York is positioned to become the first Black speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives after Democrats won a majority in the November 3 midterm elections. The party crossed the 218-seat threshold required for control, with early counts showing more than 220 seats as additional races remained uncalled.
Jeffries currently serves as House Minority Leader. A Democratic majority places him first in line for the speakership when the new Congress convenes in January 2027. The speaker is second in the presidential line of succession after the vice president. Jeffries would also set the legislative agenda, control committee assignments, and lead oversight of the executive branch under divided government.
The House gains included flips in districts that supported President Trump by wide margins in 2024. Democrats defeated several Republican incumbents in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and other states. The full composition will determine the size of the majority once all races are certified. Jeffries has emphasized affordability and institutional priorities in recent statements.
The shift ends four years of Republican control of the House. Combined with the Senate majority, Democrats will hold both chambers for the first time since 2023. This configuration creates a check on the administration's legislative proposals and expands opportunities for investigations. Jeffries' elevation would mark a historic first in the leadership of the lower chamber.
Certification of results and the formal election of the speaker will occur in early January. Several House races remained too close to call on November 4. The outcome of those contests will affect the exact margin but not the overall control of the chamber.
