Haiti gang raid kills at least 47 in Port-au-Prince neighbourhood

Port-au-Prince, August 25, 2026 — Armed gangs killed at least 47 people and injured 22 more in an overnight raid on a neighbourhood overlooking Haiti’s capital, the United Nations reported. Residents have again demanded stronger protection after repeated deadly attacks.

The assault targeted a community already under pressure from gang control of large parts of the metropolitan area. Hospitals treated the wounded while families searched for missing relatives. Local authorities confirmed the scale of the violence but provided few operational details.

Haiti’s security crisis has deepened over the past two years. Gangs control key roads, ports and neighbourhoods, restricting the movement of people and goods. International police and military support has been limited and slow to deploy in strength.

The United Nations has repeatedly called for reinforced security assistance and political dialogue. Haitian leaders continue to struggle to form a stable governing arrangement capable of restoring basic order.

The latest raid adds to a long list of mass-casualty attacks this year. For now the capital remains a city under the shadow of armed groups that operate with near impunity in many districts.
