Haiti Gang Attack Leaves 47 Dead and More Than 50 Kidnapped

At least 47 people were killed and more than 50 others kidnapped in a gang attack in Haiti on or around 25 August 2026, according to reports from Port-au-Prince.

Armed groups carried out the assault in an area already under severe pressure from organised criminal organisations. Local hospital and civil-society sources confirmed the casualty figures. The kidnapped individuals include residents of the targeted neighbourhoods.

Haiti has experienced a sustained deterioration of security since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Gangs control large parts of the capital and surrounding regions, restricting movement, commerce and access to basic services.

International efforts to stabilise the country, including a Kenyan-led police mission authorised by the United Nations, have so far failed to reverse the territorial gains of the major gangs. Food insecurity and displacement have risen sharply.

The latest attack adds to a pattern of mass killings and abductions used to extract ransom and to terrorise communities that resist gang control. Exact responsibility has not been publicly attributed to a single group.

Haitian authorities have limited capacity to respond. Police units are under-equipped and outnumbered. Appeals for additional international support continue, but deployments remain constrained by logistics and political disagreements among potential contributors.

The human cost continues to mount. Displacement camps are overcrowded, and medical facilities struggle with trauma cases. Humanitarian organisations have warned that further large-scale attacks risk tipping remaining functional areas into collapse.

No immediate rescue or recovery operation for the kidnapped has been confirmed. Families and local mediators often negotiate privately with the abductors.
