Delhi has recorded 1,777 cumulative H1N1 cases this season, with 159 new infections reported in a single 24-hour period.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda has convened a high-level meeting to review the response. The surge is part of a broader rise across several Indian cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, where paediatric cases have also increased.
H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, circulates seasonally in India. Most cases remain mild, yet the virus can cause severe illness in vulnerable groups, including young children, the elderly and people with underlying conditions. Hospitals in Delhi-NCR have reported higher occupancy in influenza wards.
Public-health measures recommended by the ministry include early testing for flu-like symptoms, isolation of confirmed cases and vaccination for high-risk groups. The seasonal vaccine is available at government and private facilities, though uptake remains uneven.
The current wave coincides with the monsoon period, when respiratory infections typically rise. Officials are monitoring whether the numbers will peak and decline or continue climbing through September.
State health departments have been asked to strengthen surveillance and ensure adequate stocks of antiviral medication. The high-level meeting is expected to produce updated guidelines for schools and public gatherings if the trajectory does not stabilise.
For most patients the illness resolves within a week with supportive care. The concern lies in the volume of cases and the potential strain on tertiary hospitals if severe complications rise in parallel.
