Gias Foods of New York City has recalled two lots of frozen pasta sold under Walmart's Bettergoods label after state laboratories in Washington and Florida found Listeria monocytogenes.
The product is Bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine in 22-ounce yellow bags. The UPC is 194346442706. The lots are L6079C, use-by 19 September 2027, and L6080C, use-by 20 September 2027. The dates are printed on the back of the bag. The company said on 15 September that no illnesses had been reported. It and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating.
Shoppers who have the bags are told to return them to the Walmart of purchase for a refund or to throw them out where pets cannot reach them. Questions go to sales@giasfoods.com.
Why two state labs matter
Routine sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services flagged the lots. That is how a nationwide Walmart item comes off shelves without a cluster of hospital reports. Listeria does not need a large outbreak to justify a recall. The bacterium grows in cold conditions. Frozen pasta sauce is a plausible home.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention counts about 1,250 listeria infections a year and about 172 deaths. Pregnant women can miscarry. Older adults and people with weak immune systems are the other high-risk groups. Healthy adults often have mild illness. The recall language follows that split: serious and sometimes fatal for some, and a refund for everyone holding the bag.
What the dates tell you
A 2027 use-by date on a frozen bag means the product can sit in a home freezer for a year. A recall issued in mid-September 2026 therefore has to reach people who bought the pasta weeks ago and people who have not cooked it yet. That is why the lot codes matter more than the brand name. Only L6079C and L6080C are listed.
Gias is the manufacturer. Walmart is the shelf. Bettergoods is the store brand. The lab work was done by two states. Until the FDA and the company finish the plant inquiry, the public instruction is simple: check the code, return the bag, do not taste it to see if it seems fine. Listeria does not advertise itself on the fork.
