Demonstrations organised by the youth campaign Gen Z regelt on 31 October 2026 began as largely peaceful marches in several German cities and ended with shop looting, smashed windows and attacks on police in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg.
In Frankfurt police reported up to 1,500 people prepared for violence. Officers detained 54 suspects aged 13 to 29. Seventeen businesses were damaged and five were plundered. Windows at a gun shop were smashed and two weapons were seized. Molotov cocktails, stones and fireworks were thrown at emergency services. Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck said about 100 clearly identified left-wing extremists had infiltrated the protest. Around 100 police officers were injured, one seriously after being hit in the face by a stone.
Berlin police said 27 officers sustained minor injuries and nearly 60 people were temporarily detained for property damage, assault and resistance. Bottles, firecrackers and eggs were thrown. Construction barricades were set alight in Hamburg. Police used water cannons in several cities to disperse crowds.
Organisers estimated tens of thousands of participants nationwide. Police figures for Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin together reached about 18,000, roughly half the organisers' claim. The campaign called for more funding for schools, action on the cost of living, opposition to public spending cuts and rejection of plans to revive military conscription. Berlin has begun increasing medical screenings ahead of a nationwide rollout in July 2027 for young men born in 2008 or later.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said violent left-wing groups and troublemakers from migrant communities had hijacked the peaceful protests. Cologne's police chief Johannes Hermanns described it as deeply saddening that young people who wanted to demonstrate for their future were infiltrated by extremists intent on violence. The movement's organisers distanced themselves from the rioting.
The Zeil shopping street in Frankfurt was closed off overnight. Special response units were deployed. Most of those detained held German citizenship, according to Poseck, though many had a migration background. No deaths were reported. The situation calmed in the early hours of 1 November, but property damage was extensive.
Politicians across parties condemned the violence while noting that the underlying concerns about education funding and living costs remain legitimate. The incidents follow similar youth-led unrest in France in recent weeks over school conditions and the cost of living. German authorities said they would pursue those responsible for the looting and attacks on officers.
Gen Z regelt translates as Gen Z takes charge. The group organised the daytime marches. Evening violence was attributed by police to separate groups that joined or infiltrated the events. In Berlin a separate evening march under a different slogan also saw clashes. The combination of large peaceful turnouts and rapid evening escalation has become a pattern in recent European cost-of-living protests.
Police continue to review video footage to identify additional suspects. Shop owners on the Zeil and in other city centres have begun assessing losses. No official estimate of the total cost of damage has been released. The federal interior ministry said further measures against organised groups that target protests would be considered.
