Youth-led protests across Germany on 31 October 2026 turned violent in several cities after largely peaceful marches earlier in the day. Organisers from the group Gen Z regelt expected large turnouts in 34 cities including Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg. Police reported roughly 18,000 participants in the three largest cities, about half the figure organisers had listed.
The campaign called for higher spending on education and health, relief from rising living costs, and opposition to any return to compulsory military service. Spokesperson Lina Friedrich said the goal was better support for schools and healthcare rather than coercion. Placards included slogans such as Education not bombs and Our future is not for sale.
Violence erupted after dark, especially in Frankfurt. Rioters smashed shop windows on the Zeil shopping street, looted stores including a trainer shop and a perfume shop, and attacked a gun shop. Police seized two weapons and made multiple arrests. Officers reported Molotov cocktails thrown at emergency services and urged bystanders to leave the city centre. Similar clashes occurred in Berlin, where 27 officers suffered minor injuries and nearly 60 people were arrested, and in Cologne and Hamburg, where police used water cannon.
German officials blamed masked radical groups for the property damage. The scenes echoed recent youth unrest in France. No deaths were reported. Cleanup continued into 1 November, with large sections of Frankfurt’s main shopping street remaining closed.
The protests coincided with Halloween. Police said most demonstrators remained peaceful during daylight hours. The gap between organiser expectations and police counts left open questions about how many participants intended only to march and how many joined later disruptions.
Authorities have not released a full national arrest total. The interior ministry and state police continue to review footage and witness statements from the affected cities.
