Delhi Capitals named Sourav Ganguly head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League on Tuesday. He replaces Hemang Badani, who took the side to a sixth-place finish in the 2026 season. Ganguly is 54. He played 113 Tests and 311 one-day internationals for India, captained the side that reached the 2003 World Cup final, and later served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The franchise put the appointment out in a social-media post on Tuesday afternoon, after weeks in which the move had been expected. Ganguly said in a statement that Delhi Capitals was a franchise close to his heart, and one he had shared a strong relationship with over the years. He said he had worked closely with the owners, the management, the support staff and the players, and that the job was an exciting responsibility. He said the group was talented, that the side had played a good brand of cricket in the recent past, and that he was looking forward to the new season and to building a strong and fearless team.
This is not his first seat in the Capitals setup. He was the side's mentor for the 2019 season, before he became BCCI president. He joined as an adviser in 2019 and served as director of cricket in 2023-24. In 2024 he was appointed director of cricket at JSW, the group that owns the franchise. His first job with a headset, as opposed to a title in the boardroom, came in the SA20 in 2025, when he coached Pretoria Capitals, Delhi's sister side in South Africa. He has also worked with the Capitals team in the Women's Premier League.
Cricinfo reported that Yuvraj Singh is expected to join as batting coach, and that an official announcement on that role had not been made. Until the franchise says so, Yuvraj remains an expectation rather than a member of the staff. The confirmed change is the head coach.
Badani's sixth place in 2026 is the mark Ganguly is being asked to beat. In a ten-team league, sixth is outside the playoff places. The Capitals have reached finals and have gone several seasons without a title. The ownership has treated the coaching seat as a lever it is willing to pull. Ganguly's name is the largest it has pulled. He is not a career coach. He is a former captain whose authority with Indian players does not depend on a coaching certificate.
The practical work starts at the auction and in the retentions. A coach appointed in October has the list, the purse and the overseas slots in front of him before the season, which a mid-season replacement does not. Ganguly already knows the owners. The unknown is how he sets a dressing room he has previously advised rather than run. Pretoria in 2025 is the only full coaching season on his record. Delhi in 2027 will be the one that is judged.
His playing numbers are the context, not the job. A man with 113 Tests does not need to prove he understands a cricket field. He does need to prove he can pick an XI, manage an overseas bowling group, and live with the weekly verdict of the points table. The statement he gave on Tuesday did not name a target. The franchise's post did not either. The target is implicit in the appointment: a side that finished sixth is being handed to the most recognisable Indian captain of his generation, eight months before the first ball of IPL 2027.
The WPL link is the other thread. Ganguly has already been around the women's side. A head-coach contract for the men's team does not automatically put him over the women's programme, and the franchise has not said it does. What it does mean is that one person now sits across the men's dugout who already knows the support staff and the ownership calendar. That is the advantage of hiring from inside. It is also the risk. An insider hire carries the habits of the seasons that ended sixth.
