A kutcha house in Hirni village, under Sadar police station in Kanpur district, came down around 11 a.m. on Sunday in the rain and killed four members of one family. Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal said all five people inside were trapped. Police, fire crews and neighbours pulled them out and took them to the community health centre at Patara. Four were declared dead there. The fifth, a daughter, was sent on to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur city.
The dead were named as Mukesh Kumar, a labourer, and his daughters Maya, 17, Neetu, 7, and Pallavi, 5. Kajal was listed as seriously injured. Ages in local Hindi reports varied slightly for Maya. The PTI identification, repeated by The Hindu, is the one used here. The front of the house was fully down. A rear room was only partly damaged. Three fire tenders and a mobile disaster-response vehicle were sent. Lal said the exact cause was still under inquiry.
The same rain took a fifth life in Budaun district. A farmer died when a wall of his house fell in the night. His wife was badly hurt. The Hindu treated the two collapses as one weather story across Uttar Pradesh. IMD had already warned of heavy rain for Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and the north-east on 6 September, with thunderstorms and gusts of 30 to 40 kmph in several belts. Hirni is not a headline tehsil. It is the kind of village where a kutcha house and a Sunday squall are enough.
Kutcha here means mud, brickbat and a roof that was never meant for a long wet spell. Kanpur's riverine belt takes monsoon water into walls that look solid in May. Once the front bay goes, the rooms behind it become a trench. That is why five people in one small house all went under at once. The neighbours who dug were the first rescue team. The CHC at Patara was the first hospital. LLR in the city was the second. That chain is the entire health system available to Hirni at 11 a.m. on a Sunday.
Yogi Adityanath was in Chitrakoot the same day, inspecting flood ground at Ramghat. The state has been moving between river floods on the Ganga and the Punpun and local house failures in villages that do not sit on a map of embankments. Hirni will not change that tour schedule. It adds four names to a list that already includes Sagar's hooch dead and Delhi's hostel dead on the same date.
Compensation and a local inquiry are the next administrative steps. Lal's sentence that the cause is being investigated is the holding line until an engineer looks at the remaining rear room. Rain is the trigger. The house was the condition. Both will be in the report. Kajal's condition at LLR is the only open medical fact. The four deaths at Patara are closed.
