Florida Governor Ron DeSantis confirmed on Tuesday that six people have died in the state from causes linked to Hurricane Isaias. The Category 2 storm made landfall near Destin early on Saturday with winds of 105 mph. It left widespread power outages and tree damage across the Panhandle.
Two of the deaths occurred in Escambia County during or immediately after the storm. One person was killed when a tree fell on a home. Another died of carbon monoxide poisoning after a generator was operated inside a garage. Four other members of that household were hospitalized. DeSantis described the remaining four deaths as more attenuated from the storm itself. They include a car crash at an intersection where the traffic signal was not working, a fatal accident during tree removal, and two cases in which medical treatment was disrupted by the storm's effects.
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey reported two storm-related deaths in her state, bringing the regional toll to at least eight. Hundreds of thousands of customers lost power across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. By Tuesday, about 5,000 customers in northwest Florida remained without electricity. Utility crews have worked to restore service, but tree damage to the distribution system proved more extensive than initial assessments indicated in the hardest-hit areas.
DeSantis praised local officials and residents for precautions that kept the death toll lower than in some previous storms. He noted that Florida's method of counting storm-related deaths includes indirect effects such as medical disruptions and post-storm accidents. The state authorized the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to stabilize supplies. Shell and Chevron began redeploying staff to Gulf operations once the storm passed.
Drone footage from the Panhandle showed damaged apartment buildings, a collapsed gas station canopy, and an overturned boat. Storm surge and heavy rain caused flooding in coastal communities. Highways and bridges reopened as the system weakened to a post-tropical cyclone. No large-scale search and rescue requests were pending shortly after landfall, an indication that structural damage to buildings was limited compared with stronger hurricanes.
The six confirmed deaths in Florida highlight the persistent risks of falling trees, improper generator use, and secondary hazards after a storm passes. Carbon monoxide poisoning from indoor generator operation remains a recurring cause of post-hurricane fatalities across the United States. Traffic signal failures at intersections have also produced crashes in previous recovery periods. The medical disruption cases underscore the vulnerability of patients who depend on continuous power or timely access to care.
Recovery work continues in Escambia and surrounding counties. Power restoration and debris removal will determine how quickly normal activity resumes. For the families of the six who died, the official confirmation of the link to Isaias is the first step in any state assistance or insurance claims that may follow.
