A passenger bus and a tanker collided on National Highway 39 near Badwar Stand in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district on the afternoon of 2 September. The bus left the road and fell into a roadside ditch. The tanker overturned. Police and the district collector said five people were dead and between 20 and 30 were hurt. A three-year-old girl was reported missing in the first hours of the search.
The crash site sits under Gudh police station, about 30 kilometres from Rewa town and about four kilometres from Gurh. Additional Superintendent of Police Bhavana Maravi told PTI that all the injured had been moved to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa. Some early accounts described the second vehicle as a bulker, others as a capsule tanker. The bus was on the Rewa-Sidhi route. One report named the operator as Pawan Travels and put about 40 people on board.
Who reached the ditch
Collector and District Magistrate Narendra Kumar Suryavanshi said the superintendent of police, medical teams, local villagers and public representatives arrived together. He warned that the death count could rise. Rescue work continued after dark because officials were not sure everyone had been taken out of the bus. The ditch held water. That fact slowed the search and raised the risk for anyone still inside.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a condolence. The Prime Minister's Office quoted him saying the loss of lives in Rewa was saddening and that he was praying for the injured. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the state would pay Rs 2 lakh to each family of the dead and Rs 1 lakh to each person who was seriously injured.
What a highway crash in Rewa usually means
NH-39 carries mixed traffic: long-distance buses, tankers, dumpers and local vehicles on a stretch that is not an expressway. Rear-end collisions at speed, followed by a drop off the shoulder, are a known pattern on such roads. The precise cause, speed and brake condition will sit with the police investigation. The immediate public facts are the five dead, the hospital list, and the missing child.
Suryavanshi's first briefing put injured at about 20. Maravi's briefing put injured at 30. Those two numbers can both be true at different hours of the same night as more passengers are counted. The missing girl is the figure that will drive the next update. If she is found in the ditch or in a ward, the story becomes a completed crash report. If she is not, the search becomes the story.
Yadav's payment schedule is the state's standard response to a fatal highway wreck. It does not wait for a chargesheet. The chargesheet, when it comes, will have to say whether the tanker driver, the bus driver, or the road design sits at the centre of the file. Until then the record is five names, a hospital corridor in Rewa, and a ditch on NH-39.
