Fireworks blast at a Temascalcingo church festival kills 10

Stored fireworks exploded at about 9.30 p.m. on Saturday beside the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Luz in Santa María Canchesdá, a settlement in Temascalcingo in the State of Mexico. Ten people were killed. Eight died in the rubble. Two died later at the general hospital in Atlacomulco. The state health secretariat counted 81 people treated. Early federal wire reports had put the injured at 64. The higher hospital figure is the one local authorities were using on Monday.

The blast brought down a room used to hold pyrotechnics and collapsed a nearby wall and part of a roof onto people waiting for the patronal display. Hundreds had gathered in the atrium for the feast of Our Lady of Light. Videos circulating after the explosion show residents walking through smoke looking for the living. Civil protection teams came from Temascalcingo, Atlacomulco, Acambay and El Oro. The army and state police sealed the block. The State of Mexico Pyrotechnics Institute sent inspectors to find any charges that had not gone off and to disable them.

Two priests, Fernando Chávez Cruz and Javier Sánchez Montes, were among the wounded. The Diocese of Atlacomulco said both were out of danger. Bishop Adolfo Miguel Castaño Fonseca issued condolences and asked parishes to support the families. IMSS-Bienestar said it had taken 31 patients in six hospitals: 16 discharged, 10 still admitted, four moved to other units, one dead in its care. Other wounded went to private hospitals, to ISSEMYM and to IMSS clinic 252. By Sunday night the state government said 54 of those taken to hospital had already been sent home.

The attorney general of the State of Mexico has opened an investigation. No official cause has been named. Patronal fiestas in central Mexico commonly store casings and powder in a room off the atrium and fire them from the street. That practice has produced a long list of similar blasts. The difference on Saturday was the number of people standing next to the store at the moment it went.

Temascalcingo municipality has about 66,000 residents. Santa María Canchesdá is small enough that the dead and the injured are neighbours of the parish office. A command post under the state Sistema de Comando was still running on Monday while engineers checked what was left of the structure. Families who had come only for the mass and the fireworks spent Sunday identifying relatives and Monday burying them.

Mexico's record with festival pyrotechnics is not a mystery to the Pyrotechnics Institute. The agency exists because this class of accident keeps happening. What it can do after the fact is clear the unexploded material and write a report. What it cannot do on a Saturday night in a parish atrium is move a store of powder away from a crowd that has already arrived. That gap is how 10 people died in Canchesdá.

Prosecutors will now ask who licensed the material, who stacked it against the church, and whether the parish or a mayordomía committee signed for it. Those names will matter in court. They will not change the count. Ten dead, 81 treated, two priests among the wounded, a wall down, a feast day converted into a crime scene. That is the record from 5 September as of Monday morning.

Similar explosions have killed worshippers in other Mexican states in other years. Each time the local story is the same sequence: a packed atrium, a stored charge, a collapse, a hospital list that rises overnight. Canchesdá is now on that list. The investigation will decide whether anyone is charged for the way the powder was kept. The town already knows what the powder did.
