Fireworks at a State of Mexico patron festival kill ten

Pyrotechnic stock exploded at about 9.30 p.m. on Saturday beside the church of Nuestra Senora de la Luz in Santa Maria Canchesda, Temascalcingo, in the State of Mexico. State officials said ten people were killed and 64 injured. Eight died at the scene. A wall and part of the church roof came down. Two priests were among the wounded and are expected to live, the diocese of Atlacomulco said.

Hundreds of residents had gathered for the patron-saint festival in a municipality of about 66,000 people, 160 kilometres north-west of Mexico City. Video circulating locally shows revellers carrying a straw bull packed with fireworks, a familiar figure in central Mexican fiestas. AFP reported that the burning bull set off a larger store of fireworks at the church. The State of Mexico Attorney General's office has opened an investigation and has not named a cause.

Civil protection, the armed forces and state police secured the square. The state Pyrotechnics Institute inspected the site for live material and told specialists to disarm what remained. Residents walked the smoke the next morning around the damaged church wall.

Mexico has a long, lethal record with festival powder. A fireworks factory blast in Tultepec in July 2018 killed 24 people. Tultepec is the country's pyrotechnic town. Temascalcingo is not. Saturday's dead were congregants standing where a religious calendar put them, next to a church that had become a magazine for the night's show.

The legal file will turn on storage. Who parked the reserve load next to the nave, whether the municipal permit covered that volume, and whether the firework bull was lit inside a safe radius of that reserve. Those are inspectable facts. The attorney general's office will either produce them or leave the town with a death count and no named custodian.

Patron-saint weeks in the State of Mexico mix Mass, street food and powder. Banning the bull figure is a slogan that does not survive contact with the calendar. What can change is where the reserve load sits. A church wall should not be the blast face of a municipal festival. That single siting decision is the difference between a scare and a collapsed roof.

For now the verified numbers are ten dead, 64 hurt, two priests among them, a 9.30 p.m. time stamp, and an inquiry that has not yet assigned a cause. The rest waits on the Pyrotechnics Institute inventory and on whether anyone is charged for the store that went up with the bull.

If the investigation stops at an accident report, the next festival in the same municipality will look like Saturday night. The only variable that changes outcomes is the distance between the reserve load and the crowd.
