Finance Minister Sitharaman to Visit Canada and US for G20 Meetings

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will travel to Canada and the United States from 25 August to 2 September, the government announced, to attend the G20 Finance Ministers meeting and hold bilateral discussions.

The itinerary places her in North America at a moment of heightened trade tensions between the United States and Canada and continued focus on sanctions related to Iran. Indian officials have indicated the meetings will address broader questions of global growth, financial stability and cooperation on tax and digital economy issues.

Sitharaman’s visit follows recent statements by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal that India is negotiating trade agreements with partners representing a combined GDP of roughly $15 trillion. The finance ministry has also highlighted regulatory reforms in the medical devices sector aimed at improving ease of doing business.

No detailed agenda for the bilateral talks has been released. The G20 gathering itself is expected to review progress on previous commitments and discuss responses to current geopolitical and energy-market pressures.

The minister’s travel comes as India continues to expand its network of free-trade negotiations across multiple regions.
