Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations searched the Washington-area home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota early Monday under a judicially authorised warrant, the Justice Department confirmed.
The Department of Justice said the action was part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Sources familiar with the matter told multiple outlets that the probe includes questions about immigration paperwork completed years ago by Omar’s late father when she was a child, as well as other matters. Omar’s office said she had done nothing wrong.
Omar called the search an outrageous abuse of power and an attempt to target political enemies. In a post on X she wrote that she was okay and would not be silenced. She has long been a frequent target of criticism from President Donald Trump and other Republicans over her immigration history and statements.
House Democratic leaders including Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar described the raid as deeply disturbing and raised questions about the weaponisation of federal law enforcement. The search occurred within the traditional 60-day window before elections when the Justice Department has historically limited certain investigative steps involving candidates. Omar is seeking re-election in November.
A neighbour reported being woken around 4:30 a.m. by banging and seeing agents and vehicles outside. Investigators were observed removing boxes. Officials have not released the sealed affidavit or specific charges. The Department of Homeland Security referred questions to the Justice Department.
Omar, the first Somali-American elected to Congress, has dismissed prior allegations of immigration fraud as baseless. The investigation has drawn renewed attention amid broader debates over immigration enforcement and political investigations in the final weeks of the midterm campaign cycle.
No arrests were reported. Omar continued public activities after the search and maintained that the action was political intimidation rather than a legitimate law-enforcement step.
