Federal agents searched the Washington-area home of Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota on Monday morning. Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorised search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. A Justice Department spokesperson said the action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation but gave no further details on the subject.
The search took place inside the 60-day window before the 3 November midterm elections. Justice Department practice has long been to avoid such steps involving political candidates so close to voting. Omar, a Democrat first elected in 2018, is running for re-election in Minnesota’s 5th District. She is an outspoken critic of President Trump.
Tom Homan, the White House official overseeing border policy, confirmed on Fox News that a search warrant had been executed. He declined to discuss specifics and referred questions to other officials. A person familiar with the investigation said it concerns alleged immigration fraud and includes paperwork filed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar was born in Somalia, spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp, and arrived in the United States at age 12.
Omar’s communications director, Jacklyn Rogers, called the raid an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the use of federal law enforcement against political opponents. “The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong,” the statement said. A BBC crew observed agents at the residence carrying boxes to a van. The street was blocked off while the search continued.
Omar has faced repeated accusations from Republican figures, including Vice President JD Vance, about immigration paperwork. She has denied the claims. The timing and the limited public information leave open whether the probe is narrowly focused on old documents or has expanded to finances, campaign funds or other matters. Previous reporting indicated investigators had looked at those areas as well.
The midterms are less than a month away. Any public development in the investigation can affect campaign dynamics in a closely watched district. The Justice Department’s decision to proceed with a warrant at this stage departs from recent historical practice and will draw scrutiny from both parties. Omar’s office has not released additional details beyond the statement condemning the search.
