The European Union adopted nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings targeting Russian individuals and companies on Monday, focusing on those involved in military production and the supply of components for drones and missiles.
The measures expand existing restrictions tied to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Officials said the listings cover entities that provide parts used in weapons systems. The step comes as fighting continues and as the United States has moved to allow limited Russian diesel exports while pressing Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities.
EU sanctions already restrict Russian oil, banking and technology transfers. The new listings add to the total number of individuals and entities subject to asset freezes and travel bans. Member states coordinated the package amid ongoing discussions about energy prices and the effectiveness of previous measures.
Russia has adapted to earlier sanctions by routing trade through third countries and expanding domestic production of some components. The EU package aims to close remaining gaps in the supply chain for munitions. Separate discussions continue over the use of frozen Russian sovereign assets to support Ukraine.
The announcement follows reports of continued Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure despite a US claim of an energy ceasefire. European leaders have expressed support for any genuine halt in attacks on energy sites while maintaining pressure through sanctions.
The listings were adopted under the EU’s established sanctions framework and take effect once published in the Official Journal. Enforcement relies on member states and financial institutions to freeze assets and block transactions involving the newly listed parties.
