Ülle Madise took the oath as President of Estonia, succeeding Alar Karis. The Riigikogu elected her on 2 September 2026. She is the first woman to hold the post.
Madise previously served as Chancellor of Justice, Estonia’s ombudsman and constitutional review authority. In that role she issued opinions on government measures during the pandemic and on digital identity systems. Her election required multiple rounds in parliament; she secured the necessary majority on the final ballot.
Estonia’s presidency is largely ceremonial but carries reserve powers in certain crises and represents the state abroad. Madise has said she will focus on constitutional continuity, digital governance, and Estonia’s place in European security arrangements. The country shares a border with Russia and has increased defence spending since 2022.
Karis completed his term without major public controversy. The transition occurred on schedule. No large public ceremony details have been widely reported beyond the formal assumption of office.
Madise’s background in law and her record at the Chancellor’s office give her a different profile from recent presidents who came from party politics or diplomacy. Parliamentarians who supported her cited her independence and familiarity with the constitutional framework.
Estonia continues to host NATO forces and to participate in European Union sanctions and support measures related to the war in Ukraine. The new president will represent the country at upcoming European Council and NATO meetings in a ceremonial capacity.
The office carries a five-year term. Madise is eligible for re-election once. No immediate policy announcements beyond continuity have been issued.
