Elon Musk spent at least $474 million backing Republican candidates in the 2026 US midterm elections, making him the largest political donor in the cycle outside of candidates funding their own campaigns.
The figure covers contributions to candidates, super PACs and related vehicles. Despite the outlay, Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate. The spending did not prevent losses in key races, including a Senate seat in Texas that flipped to the Democrats.
Musk's political activity increased sharply after he acquired X and after he aligned publicly with Republican positions on regulation, immigration and federal spending. In the 2026 cycle he directed resources toward candidates who supported the administration's priorities, including those tied to the Iran conflict and to reduced oversight of technology companies.
The midterm results showed the limits of concentrated spending in a national environment dominated by voter concern over petrol prices and the war. Exit data cited by multiple outlets indicated that cost-of-living issues outweighed campaign advertising in several contested districts. Republican candidates who received substantial support from Musk-linked groups still lost in states where gas prices had risen most sharply.
Federal election law requires disclosure of large contributions. The $474 million total aggregates reported donations and transfers. It exceeds the amounts spent by traditional party committees in some categories. Musk has not commented publicly on the final tally or on the election outcome.
Democratic leaders have said they will examine large-donor influence as part of broader oversight. With control of both chambers, they can schedule hearings and request records. Any legislative response would require 60 votes in the Senate or reconciliation procedures for budget-related items. The immediate effect of the spending is that it failed to secure the majorities Musk's preferred candidates needed.
The cycle also saw substantial spending from other technology and finance figures on both sides. Musk's total stands out for its scale and for its concentration on one party. The outcome leaves open the question of how that capital will be deployed in the 2028 presidential contest, when Vance has already begun to differentiate himself from Trump on the war.
Campaign finance data will continue to be updated as final reports are filed. The $474 million figure is the minimum confirmed total based on disclosures available on November 5. Additional late contributions may raise it further. The electoral result, however, is already clear: the spending did not prevent a Democratic sweep of Congress.
