Election Commission gives TMC factions a football player and an envelope after freezing the original symbol
Mamata Banerjee's group is now the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress. Arup Roy's group is the Democratic Trinamool Congress. Hours after Banerjee backed Congress candidate Milan Pradhan in Nandigram, West Bengal Police arrested him in 2007 murder cases.

The Election Commission on 18 September allotted new names and symbols to the two Trinamool Congress factions after freezing the All India Trinamool Congress title and the flowers-and-grass mark the day before. The group led by Mamata Banerjee will contest as the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress with a football player as its symbol. The group led by Arup Roy, with Ritabrata Banerjee as a public face of the revolt, will contest as the Democratic Trinamool Congress with an envelope. Both will be treated as recognised parties in West Bengal, Meghalaya and Tripura for now.
The freeze under paragraph 15 of the 1968 Symbols Order lasts until the Commission decides which faction, if either, is the original party. That decision will not come before the 6 October bypolls. Returning officers had already taken papers from both sides in Nandigram and Rejinagar and from a Banerjee-backed nominee in Assam's Nagaon Lok Sabha seat. Scrutiny had been held to 18 September so the new labels could be stamped on the forms.
Who stands where
In Nandigram, Sanchita Pradhan (Dey) is the Banerjee candidate. Mohammad Ehteshmul Haque is the Roy candidate. In Rejinagar, Rabiul Alam Chowdhury stands for Banerjee and Safiuzzaman Saikh for Roy. In Nagaon, Abdul Salam filed with a Form-B signed by Banerjee. Sanchita Pradhan later withdrew from Nandigram. Banerjee then said her faction would back Congress candidate Milan Pradhan rather than put up a replacement.
West Bengal Police arrested Milan Pradhan on Friday in three murder cases from 2007, hours after that endorsement. The arrest does not by itself strike his nomination. It does put the Congress-Banerjee arrangement under immediate strain in the seat that Suvendu Adhikari vacated after keeping Bhabanipur. Rejinagar fell vacant when Humayun Kabir, who had won Nowda as well, resigned.
Why the symbols matter
The flowers-and-grass mark had been the party's public face since 1998. Voters in rural South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore learned that picture over two decades. A football player and an envelope have no such memory. The Banerjee camp has fewer MPs and MLAs than the Roy camp on some tallies, and more of the original brand in the public mind. The Commission refused to let either side use that brand until the dispute is judged.
Banerjee attacked the Commission after the freeze. The interim names keep both factions on the ballot and keep the returning officers out of a fight over who owns Form-B. The October 6 count will show whether the football player or the envelope travels. It will not settle the legal title. That file stays in New Delhi after the bypolls, with the original name and symbol locked in a drawer.
