The UK Met Office has stated that the current El Niño event is set to become the strongest in living memory. Scientists described it as an unprecedented development that increases the chance 2027 will rank as the world's hottest year on record.
El Niño is a periodic warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. It alters rainfall patterns, temperature distributions and storm tracks across large parts of the globe. Strong events have historically been linked to droughts in some regions, heavier rains in others, and elevated global average temperatures.
Met Office researchers based their assessment on ocean temperature observations and climate model projections. They noted that the scale of warming now under way exceeds previous strong events in the instrumental record. The combination of El Niño and the long-term rise in greenhouse gas concentrations is expected to push surface temperatures higher still.
Previous strong El Niño episodes, such as those in 1997-98 and 2015-16, produced measurable spikes in global temperature and widespread weather extremes. The current event is projected to match or surpass those in intensity. Impacts are already visible in altered monsoon patterns and elevated heat risk in multiple continents.
The forecast has implications for agriculture, water management, energy demand and disaster preparedness. Governments and agencies that rely on seasonal outlooks are adjusting plans for potential extremes in rainfall, drought and heat through 2027.
The Met Office continues to monitor sea surface temperatures and atmospheric circulation. Updated assessments will refine the expected peak strength and the duration of the event.
