All 32 passengers got off a private sleeper bus before it was engulfed on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway on Tuesday evening. Smoke started from the engine near Sector 148. The driver stopped on the side of the road and cleared the coach. Additional deputy commissioner of police Abhay Kumar Mishra, of Greater Noida, said the evacuation was finished before the flames took the bus.
Hindustan Times reported the coach as an air-conditioned double-decker sleeper running from the Red Fort in Delhi to Muzaffarpur in Bihar, with the fire at about 5 p.m. The Indian Express described the same incident as a Delhi-Samastipur bus in the Knowledge Park police station area, and said early accounts pointed to a short circuit near the engine. The two reports agree on the date, the expressway, the count of 32, the absence of deaths, and Mishra's account of the stop and the evacuation. They differ on the destination printed on the duty. Most of the passengers were from Bihar, police said.
Udit Narayan Pandey, assistant regional transport officer for enforcement, said the priority was a replacement bus from Gautam Buddh Nagar to Bihar. He said the coach was registered in Gopalganj, that it had 36 challans adding up to about 1.5 lakh rupees, and that its documents, including the pollution certificate and the permit, were valid. A valid permit and a stack of challans can sit on the same vehicle. The challans are unpaid or pending notices. They are not, on his account, a failed fitness paper.
The fire comes less than two weeks after nine passengers died in a bus fire on the Yamuna Expressway. That toll is why a fire with no deaths is still a transport story rather than a minor roadside note. Sleeper coaches on the Delhi-Bihar run carry people overnight in berths, with a single aisle and a driver who is the first person able to stop the vehicle. On Tuesday the driver did stop, and 32 people used the time he bought. The earlier fire on the Yamuna Expressway is the case in which that time was not there.
Mishra's sequence is the operational fact. Smoke from the engine, a stop on the shoulder, an evacuation, then the bus in flames. A short circuit near the engine is the preliminary account the Express reported, not a finished inquiry. The transport department has the vehicle, the permit file and the challan list. An electrical fault in a sleeper coach is a known class of fire on these runs, because the coaches add air-conditioning load and aftermarket wiring to a chassis that was not always built as a berth bus.
Pandey's note on the 36 challans is the enforcement half. A coach with a valid pollution certificate can still have been stopped 36 times. The amount, about 1.5 lakh rupees, is small against the cost of the vehicle and large against a single trip's margin. Whether those challans are for overloading, for lane discipline, or for documents is not in the first statement. The fact that he volunteered the number, on the evening of a fire, means the file was already on the enforcement desk.
Passengers were being helped onward. Pandey said a bus was being arranged. For people heading to Muzaffarpur or Samastipur, the difference is a district, not a state. The journey they had paid for was an overnight run east. They will finish it on another coach, without the bags that were in the burning one if the fire took the hold. The reports do not give a count of lost luggage. They give a count of people: 32, all off, none dead.
The open question is the electrical one. If the inquiry confirms a short circuit at the engine on a coach with valid papers and 36 challans, the enforcement response is a check of the sleeper fleet on the same permit route, not a single write-off. The Yamuna Expressway deaths are two weeks behind this fire. The expressway at Sector 148 is the case in which the driver and the passengers had the minutes.
