DRDO jumpers open combat chutes at 20,000 feet over Nyoma

Three Indian test jumpers left an aircraft at 22,000 feet above the Nyoma-Mudh drop zone on 26 August, in air that sat at minus 15 degrees Celsius, and opened an Indian-made combat parachute two thousand feet later. They landed at 13,700 feet, the same elevation as the Indian Air Force fighter strip that now sits 23 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation named the jumpers: Wing Commander Rahul Jha, the chief test jumper, Master Warrant Officer R. J. Singh, holder of the Vayu Medal (Gallantry), and Master Warrant Officer Vivek Tiwari. They wore the full Military Combat Parachute System and its supporting kit: an indigenous para computer, an oxygen system, and specialised jumpsuits. DRDO posted the result the same day.
The system was designed at the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment in Agra, with life-support work from the Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory in Bengaluru. ADRDE built it for the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Special Frontier Force. Maximum payload is 200 kilograms, including combat gear. Earlier free-fall work had already taken the same canopy to 32,000 feet, which is why DRDO now calls it the only parachute in Indian service that can be opened above 25,000 feet.
High-altitude drops fail for dull reasons. Thin air cuts the bite of a canopy. Cold stiffens lines and hardware. Mountain winds shear across a valley floor that is itself a plateau. A jumper who opens too late has little time to steer onto a short, sloped drop zone. The Nyoma trial put those conditions on a checklist rather than a brochure. Deployment at 20,000 feet left a 6,300-foot ride to a landing at the same height as the runway. That is a working envelope, not a demonstration hop onto a plains airfield.
Nyoma is not a random test site. The mud strip from 1962 sat unused for decades, then reopened in 2009 as an advanced landing ground. The Border Roads Organisation rebuilt it under Project Himank at a cost of about Rs 218 crore. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh opened the paved Mudh-Nyoma station on 12 November 2025 after landing in a C-130J. The runway is 2.7 kilometres long and 46 metres wide. Fighters, transports and helicopters can use it. Winter temperatures there drop toward minus 20 degrees Celsius.
The tactical claim is simple. Special forces that want to insert onto the Changthang plateau, or onto other Himalayan shoulders, have relied on imported high-altitude canopies and computers. Those contracts come with export licences, spare-part queues and limited rights to modify the software that tells a jumper when to pull. An Indian para computer and oxygen pack can be rewritten, repaired and stocked without a foreign desk. DRDO said the trial showed “efficacy, reliability and tactical employability” in extreme high-altitude conditions. The phrasing is official. The practical point is that the services now have a canopy they can own through its full life.
The system’s listed advantages are a lower rate of descent and stronger steering than older service chutes. Those two traits matter more at 13,700 feet than they do over a plains drop zone. A slower sink gives a jumper time to pick a landing among rocks and streams. Steering decides whether a stick of soldiers lands together or scatters across a ridgeline. None of that replaces training. It does change what a planner can put on a map.
Nyoma has already hosted para drops of troops, vehicles and equipment. The IAF has used the sector for exercises since the 2020–21 stand-off with China. Chinooks, Mi-17s and Apaches have worked the same valleys. A combat free-fall system that functions in that air, at that temperature, is a piece of the same kit list as a paved fighter runway.
Foreign dependence on high-altitude aerial delivery is easy to ignore until a licence stalls. India has spent a decade building its own drop systems for cargo and people. The MCPS sits in that line. The 26 August jump did not invent high-altitude parachuting. It put an Indian canopy, computer and oxygen set through a profile that matches the ground the Army and the Special Frontier Force actually have to use.
What remains is production scale and service induction timelines, which DRDO did not publish with the trial note. The three named jumpers have now shown that the hardware works at minus 15 degrees over one of the highest drop zones in regular use. The next test is whether enough sets exist when a unit needs them on a short notice, in the same mountains, at night.
