Divya Deshmukh will play her first Global Chess League matches for defending champions Alpine APL Pipers when Season 4 opens in Bengaluru on 5 September. The Hindu put the dates at 5 to 13 September at The Lalit Ashok. An earlier Indian Express draft note had 3 September as the start. The venue and the mid-September close are not in dispute. The league is a Tech Mahindra and FIDE joint venture. Six franchises field mixed teams of 36 invited players.
The Pipers’ list now has Magnus Carlsen, who sat out Season 3, Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, Koneru Humpy, world rapid champion Volodar Murzin and Deshmukh. She told The Hindu she was excited, that the league is not like other events because of the crowd, and that she had only seen Bengaluru from the airport. She told The Times of India in Nagpur that the Pipers were the side she had hoped for, that she was glad to share a team with Murzin again after the World Rapid and Blitz, and that she wanted to learn from Carlsen now that they are teammates rather than distant acquaintances.
Deshmukh is 20, an Arjuna Award winner and the 2025 Women’s World Cup champion. Most of her year has been individual classical and knockout events. GCL is rapid chess in a franchise shirt, with an audience in the hall. That is the format change she flagged. She also said she hoped a woman would become India’s 100th grandmaster. She did not name a candidate.
The rest of the league map shifted in the Mumbai draft. Viswanathan Anand moves to the Alaskan Knights for the first time, with Arjun Erigaisi, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus and Abhimanyu Mishra. FYERS American Gambits drafted Nihal Sarin, Javokhir Sindarov and Bibisara Assaubayeva. World champion D. Gukesh, Vaishali Rameshbabu and R. Praggnanandhaa are not in this edition. Praggnanandhaa has just become the first Indian to win the Grand Chess Tour, a result Almanaque has already recorded. His absence from GCL is a calendar choice, not a ranking drop.
Season 4 is therefore a home event without the two most famous Indian men of the current cycle. The draw of the Pipers is Carlsen plus two Indian women of different generations, Humpy and Deshmukh, in the same room. The test for Deshmukh is simpler than that billing. Rapid games, a team score, and a city she has so far seen only from the terminal.
