President Droupadi Murmu appointed BJP Rajya Sabha member Dinesh Sharma as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 5 September. Rashtrapati Bhavan said he will take office from the date he assumes charge. He succeeds Admiral D.K. Joshi (retd), who has held the post since 8 October 2017.
Sharma is 62. He was deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2017 to 2022 under Yogi Adityanath, with briefs that included higher education, technical education, science and technology, and information technology. Before that he was mayor of Lucknow. He sits in the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. That term was due to end on 25 November. He is also vice-chairperson of the House.
Born on 12 January 1964 in Lucknow, he holds a doctorate from Lucknow University and taught commerce before he entered full-time politics. On Sunday he thanked the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP's central leadership. He said he would do the work with devotion, honesty and dedication.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a Union Territory. The lieutenant governor is the central government's man on the ground. The file mixes ordinary civil administration with military geography. The islands sit on the western edge of the Malacca approaches. The Andaman and Nicobar Command is India's only joint theatre command. Port Blair, Campbell Bay and the new work at Nicobar are watched in New Delhi, Beijing and the ASEAN capitals for reasons that have little to do with municipal budgets.
Joshi's eight-year tenure was long for the post. A retired chief of naval staff brought a service reading of the archipelago. Sharma brings a different kit: a party politician, a former deputy chief minister, and a man who has run a large state education and IT file. The Home Ministry will expect him to keep the development and tourism brief moving without losing the security coordination that Joshi treated as the core of the job.
The appointment also frees a Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh before 25 November. That is a separate political fact. The BJP will decide who fills it. Sharma's exit from the vice-chair is another small change inside the House.
For island residents the test is more local. Ferry schedules, land records, tribal reserve boundaries, and the pace of projects on Great Nicobar have been the live arguments. A civilian LG with a long BJP career will be read in Port Blair as a signal that the Centre wants a political manager rather than another admiral. Whether that reading is fair will depend on the first months of the file, not on the communique.
Sharma has not yet named a date for taking charge. Until he does, Joshi remains the incumbent. The gap is normal. It is also the last quiet interval before the new office-holder inherits a command-heavy territory that does not run like a mainland district.
