Dhiraj Bommadevara wins World Cup Final gold with a 10 in the shoot-off

Dhiraj Bommadevara became the first Indian man to win an individual title at the Archery World Cup Final, beating Japan's Nakanishi Junya 6-5 in a shoot-off on Sunday in Saltillo, Mexico.

The five sets ran 28-28, 28-29, 29-28, 28-30 and 28-27. After five sets the match sat at 5-5. Each archer then shot one arrow. Bommadevara scored 10. Nakanishi scored 9. That was the title.

Nakanishi, ranked about world No. 20, took the second set 29-28 and the fourth 30-28. A tied fifth set would have given him the gold. Bommadevara shot 28 in the fifth. Nakanishi shot 27. The shoot-off followed. The Indian, ranked about world No. 10, held the last arrow of the season-ending event and put it in the 10-ring.

Bommadevara is 25, an Army athlete from Vijayawada. He was India's only archer in the eight-player 2026 World Cup Final field. He reached the gold match through the quarter-final and semi-final. He had left the 2023 and 2024 Finals without a medal. This year he qualified by winning the men's individual recurve title at the third World Cup stage in Antalya, where he also took mixed team gold with Kumkum Mohod.

India's record at the World Cup Final was thin on the men's side. Jayanta Talukdar won bronze in 2010. No Indian man had won gold. On the women's side Dola Banerjee won the recurve title in Dubai in 2007. Deepika Kumari remains the most decorated Indian at the event, with six medals across eight appearances, five of them silver and one bronze. Bommadevara's gold is India's first World Cup Final individual title since Banerjee, a gap of 19 years, and the first by a man.

India finished the four-stage 2026 World Cup circuit with seven medals from Puebla, Shanghai, Antalya and Madrid, four of them gold. Bommadevara was the only Indian with an individual gold on that circuit and now adds the Final.

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan issued a public congratulation on Monday, addressing the archer by his handle and calling the result a new chapter in Indian sport. The line is political courtesy. The sporting fact is smaller and clearer. A 25-year-old who had missed the Final podium twice won the one-arrow lottery against a Japanese archer who had outscored him in two of five sets.

World Cup Final fields are eight names, not a full championship draw. The title still sits on the season's last day and still requires the same five-set format used all year. Bommadevara's season now reads: Antalya individual gold, Antalya mixed gold, Saltillo Final gold. The next outdoor championships will test whether that run holds when the field is 64 rather than 8. For Monday the record is already written. An Indian man has the World Cup Final title, and he won it with a 10 after a 5-5 card.
