Dhiraj Bommadevara takes World Cup Final gold with a 10 in the shoot-off

Dhiraj Bommadevara won the men's recurve title at the Archery World Cup Final in Saltillo, Mexico, on 13 September. The 25-year-old Army archer from Vijayawada beat Japan's Nakanishi Junya 6-5 after a shoot-off. He shot a 10. Nakanishi shot a 9.

He is the first Indian man to win that individual crown. Dola Banerjee won the women's recurve title in Dubai in 2007. Jayanta Talukdar took bronze in 2010. Between Talukdar and Sunday there were 16 years without an Indian men's recurve medal at the Final. Deepika Kumari still owns the Indian collection at the event, with six medals, five of them silver, from eight appearances. Dhiraj now owns the gold that none of the men had.

The sets ran 28-28, 28-29, 29-28, 28-30, 28-27. Nakanishi, world No. 20, took a 5-3 lead after a perfect fourth set and needed only a share of the fifth. Dhiraj scored 28 to Nakanishi's 27 and forced the single arrow. World No. 10 against world No. 20, decided by one ring.

Two blank Finals, then this

Dhiraj left the 2023 and 2024 World Cup Finals without a medal. This week he came through the quarter-final and the semi-final and then won a match that could have ended in the fourth set. That is the whole improvement. Same archer, same event, one extra set of nerve when the Japanese three-arrow volley went clean.

Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister posted his congratulations to the Army man. The praise is earned and also beside the point. The point is the ranking path. A World Cup Final gold does not by itself move an Olympic seed, but it is the season-ending event that the rest of the circuit treats as a form guide. Indian recurve men have spent years watching Deepika's podiums and waiting for a matching men's night. They now have one name and one score: 10 to 9.

Saltillo is not Paris or Los Angeles. It is a Final, which means only the season's best are invited. Getting there twice without a medal and winning on the third try is a better story than a surprise title from a qualifier. Coaches will use the fifth-set 28 and the shoot-off 10 in training films because those are the arrows that used to miss.

The next test is not another Final. It is whether the same fifth-set composure appears in team matches, where India has historically been closer to medals than in the men's individual. Dhiraj cannot manufacture three other archers. He can stop being the man who leaves the Final with nothing. That part of the record is already rewritten.
